PRESS RELEASE
National Rural Health Association
April 22, 2026
On April 21, 2026, the House passed H.R. 2493, the Improving Care in Rural America Reauthorization Act. This bill reauthorizes the Rural Health Care Services Outreach Programs, which expand health care service delivery and improve population health for rural communities through community engagement and evidence-based models.
NRHA applauds passage of H.R. 2493 and will continue to work with our partners in Congress to achieve our rural health priorities. NRHA is especially grateful for the support of Reps. Carter (R-GA), Figures (D-AL), Rulli (R-OH), and Schrier (D-WA) for leading this bill through passage in the House.
In fiscal year 2025, HRSA awarded about $15 million to 58 awardees as part of the Rural Health Care Services Outreach Programs. Most recently, outreach programs increased access to care in over 345 rural counties for almost 600,000 individuals. The programs boast measurable improvements in clinical measures and generate $3 into rural communities for every $1 federal dollar spent. Reauthorization of this legislation is integral in ensuring lasting access to health care services in rural communities and secures continued expansion of these vital programs.
